Newark guaranteed income pilot launches website
Leading from the Newark Guaranteed Income Task Force Report’s release last year, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has continued to advance toward a guaranteed income program with the newly-launched Newark Movement for Economic Equity website. The site outlines the overall parameters of the guaranteed income pilot, its research interests, key partners, and the larger vision of guaranteed income within the city of Newark.
Program Manager Hawwa Muhammad leads the Newark pilot from design through to launch and implementation, and JFI continues to provide technical assistance in addition to serving on the research advisory committee. The team is planning for a Spring 2021 launch with a cohort of 30 Newark residents.
In 2020, the City of Newark, alongside JFI and Economic Security Project, released a report that drew on the collective knowledge of 33 organizations across Newark and New Jersey, authored by Rachel Black, now Associate Director of the Aspen Institute’s Financial Security Program. The report, Building Financial Security: Newark’s Roadmap Toward a Guaranteed Income, outlines the particular ways a guaranteed income serves to bolster the failures of the existing safety for Newark residents.
